2. How effective is the combination of your product and acillary texts?

Film distribution is very important of a film’s success. A film distributor is an individual or a company responsible for the marketing of a film, getting people aware the film is to be released. They undertake this by identifying the audience and reaching them, deciding a suitable release date for the targeted audience, for example if the film is aimed at children the school holidays will make it more likely for them to go and watch it as they will have time unoccupied by education to use, more possibly to see the film than if they were in education hours. A distributor also controls the platform method and materials in which the film is exhibited; theatrically or home viewing such as advertisements during television breaks or before a film viewing in a cinema. They must ensure that the exhibitor has a full line of advertising material to attract the largest possible audience. They work with the physical production of the film and the creation of the advertisements for newspapers, magazines, posters, television commercials and trailers. A distributor must also feel confident that they can make a sufficient return on their investment.

Distributors work alongside a marketing plan, for example up to a year before the actual release date they will start leaking teaser posters and trailers into the world, getting the film into people’s heads without giving anything away so that when the film comes out everyone will be excited to see it. As it gets nearer to the release date they will try to attract as many people as possible by becoming part of other advertising campaigns, for example the original book cover of The Woman in Black was changed to the film’s poster design shortly as The official trailer was revealed in October 2011 and the official posters were released in January 2012 which allowed its fan base to gradually extend further.
